Jaw Fracture
TMJ fractures occur when there is direct trauma to the face. Most often, the jaw breaks along the condyles, the rounded projections on either side of the jaw bone. Dislocation of the joints may also cause fractures. Car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and assaults are the most common causes of TMJ fractures.
Dr. Alfi is an expert in the care of facial trauma and reconstruction surgery. Patients can find comfort in their surgical capabilities to get them through the entire care process. The first step in the treatment process will be a thorough exam of your face to check for bruising, swelling, or protrusions on either side of your face. At this time we will also evaluate your pain level. It is important that you pay attention to the discomfort in your jaw as you chew and note any increases to your pain level. The doctors may also take X-rays to determine if you have a fracture and the extent of the break. Depending on the severity, treatment for a jaw fracture may require surgery. Clean breaks can sometimes heal on their own when the jaw is immobilized.
