Jaw Fracture
TMJ fractures occur when there is direct trauma to the face. Most often, the jaw breaks along the condyles, the rounded projections on either side of the jaw bone. Dislocation of the joints may also cause fractures. Car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and assaults are the most common causes of TMJ fractures.

The first step in the treatment process will be a thorough exam of your face to check for bruising, swelling, or protrusions on either side of your face. The doctors may also take X-rays to determine if you have a fracture and the extent of the break. Depending on the severity, treatment for a jaw fracture may require surgery. Clean breaks can sometimes heal on their own when the jaw is immobilized.
